Why TutorJack Works

1-on-1 instruction is effective, but it's an inefficient setting for practice. We solve that by teaching your child in a 1-on-1 breakout room before giving them a chance to practice what they've learned in a small group setting. Our average student-teacher ratio of just 2.5:1 is the lowest in the industry, giving your child the attention needed to excel.

It's the most effective and efficient tutoring center method, and it's backed by evidence.

The TutorJack method is built around three pillars of evidence: 1-on-1 instruction is the most effective mode of instruction, concept mastery must be ensured before moving on and the social effect in education is powerful. Our program is built around these ideas, and our students learn more and perform better because of it.

1-on-1 Instruction is Effective Instruction

Bloom's 2 Sigma Problem is an observation originally made by educational psychologist William Bloom. He found that students who were taught in 1-on-1 settings using mastery learning techniques performed two standard deviations above the mean, placing them in the top 2% of learners. Additionally, he found that nearly all (9 out of 10) of the 1-on-1 students performed as well as the top 20% of the conventional classroom students.

So we know that 1-on-1 is the most effective setting for instruction, but learning requires practice, not just instruction. The weakness of pure 1-on-1 tutoring is that it is inefficient. You are paying a tutor to watch your child practice, and who likes to have someone constantly looking over their shoulder as they practice?

Mastery Must be Shown Before Progression

The second principle supported by education research is the concept of mastery learning techniques, which simply means that students should exhibit mastery of a foundational topic before moving on to further topics. Each TutorJack session is designed to produce mastery of one concept. At the end of every TutorJack session, students complete challenge problems that incorporate what they learned that day, and they are then asked to teach the concept back to the tutor.

This is a powerful learning approach that immediately reveals whether the student has true mastery of a concept.

Students Learn Best Around Social Connections

Several studies show that students perform better when they are in learning environments in which they have multiple social connections. The value of learning in a center around other students while receiving instruction in a personalized, 1-on-1 setting truly is the best of both worlds.

FAQ

TutorJack Method FAQs

  • What is the typical student-teacher ratio at a TutorJack tutoring center?

Our max student-teacher ratio is 3:1, and we are frequently working closer to 2:1.

We use a unique method of instruction that alternates between teaching periods and practice periods. Each student will spend 1:1 time with an instructor in one of our custom-designed glass breakout pods, followed by reinforcement practice in the group area. During the practice phase, an additional instructor helps students with practice problems as needs arise.

These periods are very short (about five minutes), and our curriculum is designed around this method. It is very effective because of the individualized instruction and the immediate availability of assistance during practice.

  • Why is 1-on-1 instruction more effective?

1-on-1 instruction is built around your child and his or her specific needs. Every student comes into our program with different strengths and weaknesses and learning styles, and making 1-on-1 instruction time a core part of our program allows us to meet those needs in a way that works for your kid.

  • If 1-on-1 instruction is so effective, why not just do 1-on-1 tutoring?

A good tutoring center experience should be a self-contained learning program. That means students should also do practice during sessions because practice is a necessary part of mastering academic concepts. 1-on-1 instruction is great, but practicing in a 1-on-1 setting isn't. You're paying a tutor to watch your child do worksheets, which is inefficient at best and deterimental at worst. After all, what student wants to be constantly watched while trying to work through practice problems? It creates a roadblock in the process of encouraging students to work through concepts independently.

Our method combines the best of both settings. We do our primary teaching in a 1-on-1 setting and have students practice in small groups, with an additional tutor available to help students with problems and re-teach concepts as needed.

  • What is mastery learning, and how does TutorJack incorporate it?

At its core, mastery learning is simply the idea that students need to master foundational concepts before moving on. This sounds obvious, but due to the non-personalized nature of most school classrooms, this is an educational concept that is often not applied in school. In a typical school setting, students are graded via testing, and they may score well or poorly on that test. But there's no subsequent instruction for students who score poorly -- only bad grades. TutorJack is a personalized learning experience, and each session has one singular goal: have the student master that day's concept.

We ensure this happens through multiple checks throughout the session. Students learn a concept early in the session, and they follow that up with immediate practice under the supervision of a small group instructor. The student then completes challenge problems to ensure understanding and, finally, finishes the session by teaching the concept back to the instructor in a 1-on-1 setting. This is the ultimate test of mastery, and it ensures your child is leaving with our center with skills they didn't show up with.

  • What if my child doesn't gain mastery by the end of the session?

If your son or daughter doesn't show mastery by the end of the session, we'll re-do that topic at the next session. A key part of mastery learning techniques is that progression doesn't happen until mastery is obtained.

  • What are your tutor qualifications?

This is an important question! TutorJack has significantly higher tutor requirements than most tutoring centers. We require a college degree and prior teaching experience, and tutors come on as W2 employees who go through our proprietary training and certification program. They are also background checked before they are hired.

We pay our tutors significantly more than the industry standard, too. Many tutoring centers pay little more than minimum wage. It's impossible to recruit, train and retain qualified tutors on that kind of wage, so the quality of instruction inevitably suffers. We pay tutors significantly more and have much less turnover. This results in a better experience and better outcomes for your kid.

  • Does your curriculum line up with what my kid is doing in school?

Yes, because the learning plan we will develop for your child will be based on both the assessment test and their school curriculum. Some of our students are enrolled at TutorJack specifically to improve grades in school, and we welcome that. For those students, the learning plan will be developed specifically toward that goal.

Other students are enrolled to provide a more general academic support and ensure long-term success in a specific area, like math. Even for these students, the learning plan will be developed in an effort to also improve school performance.

  • Can my kid get help with more than one subject?

Yes, of course. There are also multi-subject discounts available.

  • Do you also offer 1-on-1, private tutoring?

Yes. While our standard tutoring center program features a lot of 1-on-1 instruction, we also have fully 1-on-1 private tutoring available at an hourly rate. This can also be done at our center, and we can even do short 30 or 45 minute sessions if that's your preference.

  • Will I be updated on my kid's progress?

Absolutely. Your child's tutor will upload notes to your Parent Portal after every session, so you'll stay updated on the progress that's being made. This is one of the many advantages of very low student-teacher ratios. Your kid's tutor will know your child and will be able to speak to his or her progress.

  • How does the assessment test relate to the learning plan?

We've identified hundreds of concepts that form the basis of a student's progression from kindergarten to high school in a specific subject. The assessment test tells us which concepts your child has mastered and which they haven't, and it's specific to his or her grade level. The learning plan is based on the results of the assessment test and plots a path to where your kid needs to go over the next several months of tutoring.

  • What kind of contract do I have to sign?

No contract, no commitment. If you don't think the tutoring experience your child is having meets or exceeds your expectations, you can quit whenever you'd like.
